Category, team size and funding

How the three inferred fields are worked out, and why so many say unknown.

Three fields nobody filled in. We work them out from what a product publishes about itself, they come from a fixed list, and a great many of them say unknown.

If you are wondering why so much of the table is empty, that is the reason. If one of them is wrong about your app, there is a fix at the end.

They come from a fixed list

Every category, team size and funding status comes from a set list. Nothing can invent a new one. Otherwise you would be scrolling hundreds of near-identical categories, and filtering by one would stop telling you anything.

It costs something. There is no entry for a public company, so a big listed incumbent shows as unknown for funding rather than being squeezed into the nearest wrong answer.

Unknown is a real answer

It is the default and it is common. Nothing is ever filled in with a plausible guess. Guessing would mean printing "venture-backed" on somebody's weekend project, and a blank is better than that.

So a blank funding status means we do not know, not that the product is bootstrapped. A blank team size means the same.

Every label comes with a reason

We never store a label on its own. We store what we saw and where we saw it, so if you ask why your app is in a category, there is an actual answer rather than an opinion.

We do not rank quality

There is no score for whether a product is any good, and there is not going to be one. We report what launched, what it charges, what it runs on and who it points at. What that means is yours to decide.

A label is wrong

Use Report an error on the listing and say what it should be. No account needed.

If the product is yours, claim the listing and send us the right value directly. Once we accept it, it stays.

Still stuck? Send us a message and a person will read it.
