In-app messaging software lets you put conversations and notifications directly inside your product. You add an SDK to your iOS or Android app, or a snippet to your JavaScript front end. That SDK renders chat UIs, inboxes, toasts, or banners, and talks to a cloud service that handles who gets what and when.
You define audiences and triggers. A trigger can be a user action, a lifecycle event, or a backend signal. The service evaluates targeting rules and journeys, picks the right template, and personalizes it with attributes. It then delivers a message to the in-app surface, or routes it to other channels if needed.
Realtime delivery runs over persistent connections such as WebSocket. That enables live threads, typing indicators, presence, and read receipts. Some products use a dedicated realtime backbone so updates feel instant; others batch and poll when ultra-low latency is not required.
Content is created in a visual editor with variables and components. You can localize text, add buttons, and attach media. Moderation tools filter profanity and block abusive content in user-to-user chats.
Event and message data stream back for analytics. You measure opens, replies, and downstream actions, and feed insights to a data warehouse or a CRM. APIs and webhooks let your backend create messages, sync preferences, and keep user profiles current.
Platforms vary by focus: Intercom provides a support messenger inside your app, Knock and Courier orchestrate cross-channel notifications that include an in-app surface, and Ably supplies the realtime transport that powers live experiences.
Onboarding: Show a welcome message the first time someone signs in, then guide them with a short series of tips.
Feature announcements: Publish a release note card in the app when you ship something new, with a button to learn more.
Transactional updates: Post an order confirmation or receipt in the in-app inbox alongside email and push.
Proactive support: Offer a messenger where customers can ask questions, and send a follow-up nudge if a conversation stalls. Intercom is often used this way.
Lifecycle nudges: Remind a user to finish setup after they start a task, or celebrate a milestone with a message.
Community and chat: Host user-to-user conversations, group chats, or event rooms. Apps like Kik, Marco Polo, and Messenger Kids show common patterns such as media sharing, reactions, and controls.
Operational alerts: Notify users about maintenance windows or service recoveries right where they work.
Preferences and consent: Present a simple UI to choose topics, mute threads, or opt into specific message types.
Vendors mix messaging volume, user counts, and seats to match different use cases.
